Ten-year-old Wilkie Carmichael, a troubled boy who cannot tell the real world from his adventure stories, is taken by his parents out to a barrier island off the New England coast to help his father trick the owner of an old hotel there into selling out to a real estate developer. But when a hurricane sweeps over them threatening to destroy everything, Wilkie talks the inn keeper into saving a Civil War bandstand on a nearby cliff, long a beacon of hope and happiness for people up and down the North Shore. Escaping from his parents' incessant arguments into the magical world of his swashbuckling stories and vivid imagination, Wilkie leads the old man and a Boston Irish kitchen maid out onto the windswept headlands at the height of the storm to attempt the hero's impossible task.
Sixty years later, after a life of writing Hollywood horror movies, Wilkie comes back to the island to confront the pain and mystery of the weekend that so completely changed his life the memory of his first and lifelong love, the final destruction of his family at the hands of a randy scoundrel, and the disappearance of a precious Winslow Homer painting. In the process he discovers again the lesson the old man tried so hard to teach him, and after years of decline and depression Wilkie starts to write again, the last great story of his life.

The book had a lovely start. The writer has a great gift for words and uses them to create good characters and a great image of the place where the story take place. The book seems to lose steam in the second half, which in spite of the attempt to tie up the mystery, feels tacked on and inorganic to the story.Product details
